Isn?t it about time we did content discovery differently?

Is anyone else a little tired of being pushed towards certain content because of mined personal information? It's kind of like having that friend who resembles you a little too closely; eventually they become tiresome. Here's how we might try doing recommendations differently.

A Showpiece E-Book for iPad

Blogging in The New York Times, technology columnist David Pogue calls Our Choice ? Al Gore?s new e-book app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch ? ?one of the most elegant, fluid, immersive apps you?ve ever seen.? Pogue notes that the Our Choice app updates Gore?s 2009 best-selling book about solving Earth?s climate crisis and that ?the real magic? is in the visual elements, which include more than 400 pages of interactive photos, graphics, and video. Pogue concludes: ?For once, here?s an e-book that really does redefine the net effect of an e-book.?

XBLA developer Twisted Pixel aiming for iOS

Touch Arcade recently chatted with the CEO of developer Twisted Pixel Michael Wilford. Twisted Pixel is the group behind Xbox Live Arcade hits like The Maw and Splosion Man, the latter of which was the "influence" for Capcom's "MaXplosion." Touch Arcade asked about iOS development, and Wilford first said the Capcom incident had "lit a fire under our butts" to try to make an iOS game. He then confirmed that Twisted Pixel is "working on something" for Apple's platform.

That's exciting! We don't yet know what it is they're working on; TUAW contacted Wilford to ask if it might be an original IP or a port of one of the XBLA titles, but were told it's still too soon to say. Wilford does tell us there'll be something to share soon, so we're all ears.

There's one more wrinkle to this: XBLA is currently one of the biggest online marketplaces for downloaded games out there, and it could be argued it's in direct competition with Apple's App Store. We've already seen some crossover between the two platforms, and whenever this project is ready to see the light, it seems we'll have even more.

MacBook Air supply tightens at Best Buy, other retailers

If you're shopping for a MacBook Air, stop. Right now. Just put down your credit card and wait -- not too much longer, or so it would seem. As of Sunday evening, major Mac outlet Best Buy is reporting all MBA models as 'not available for shipping,' a strong if not overwhelming indication that the anticipated refresh of Apple's hottest, leanest notebook is only days or weeks away.

The Best Buy supply constraint, spotted by 9to5Mac, aligns with other order slowdowns or stops from other vendors. Our checks of MacMall and PC Connection show similar 'call for availability' alerts on most MBA models, although Apple's own online store still shows MBAs shipping in 24 hours and most Amazon storefronts are showing rapid availability.

Given the steady drumbeat of rumors around a Sandy Bridge-based refresh of the popular ultralight Mac notebook, it's only to be expected that supplies of the current build would start to dwindle in advance of the new version. The counterargument to an early-summer MBA release is the suggestion that Apple may be holding off on new Mac releases until Lion is ready for prime time later in July; of course, any new Mac bought today comes with a free Lion download once it's ready to go.

In its August issue, Consumer Reports has orchestrated a rare test of 45 smartphones with a focus on their integrated cameras. It finds that the eight-megapixel camera in the T-Mobile G2X was the very best, with very good still images and the best in terms of video quality. Unix mail notifications via Growl

This tip lets you get a notification through Growl whenever new Unix mail arrives, with the subject of the mail. I get Unix mail as a result of run cron-jobs. I use cron because whether you have lingon or not; it is far easier to schedule a job with cron.

When there is something that I really want to watch from a process run by cron I do:

echo "the very interesting stuff" |mail -s "IMPORTANT" myusername

or some other Unix command to send the same mail message.

The problem is that I have to manually go into Unix mail and manually check if there is any new mail or not, and sometimes I just forget to do that.

Therefor I have made a notification in Growl via a launchd job and an AppleScript.

Prerequisites: You need to have installed Growl and Growl helper.

The lanchd process checks if your /var/mail/You mail file has changed, and if it has, the launchd process will run the ...

Playing animated gifs saved in the ios Camera roll

The CompuServe GIF format is my favorite image format. Sure you only get up to 256 colors and sure it's old, but it has a lot to like: a powerful compression algorithm, simplicity, and of course, animation.

This hint will show you how to view animated gifs saved to your camera roll from uiwebviews (pictures synced to your iPhone via iTunes are converted to jpeg, so it won't work for those).

Simply:
  • Open the Photos app.
  • Open the camera roll album.
  • Tap the gif you would like to view.
  • Tap the Action button in the lower left corner (it looks like an arrow jumping out of a box).
  • Select 'Email Photo.'
The email composer will come up, with the animated gif in the body. When you are done watching just hit cancel, and delete the draft message (unless you wanted to send it to someone else of course).

[crarko adds: I tested this, and it works as described. It makes sense since Mail wou ...
